Heroes of Might & Magic 4 How to Survive HyperZone

HEROES OF MIGHT AND MAGIC 4
(Windows PC)

Composers: Rob King & Paul Romero

I have never played this game and I don't even own it, but somehow I ended up with an mp3 of the sea area theme and it blew me away. I didn't even know for sure what game it came from, as I had it tagged only as "Heroes of Might and Magic". A little research shows me it's from the 4th game in the series. Here it is along with some other great songs.

  • Main Menu Theme
    Time: 1:37
    Size: 1.48 MB
    Automatic ending
    Comment:
The opening theme starts off with a typical trumpet flourish, but then gives way to something much more dark and ominous.

  • Rough Lands Theme

    Size: 2.35 MB
    Automatic ending
    Comment:
Soft, very authentic-sounding celtic melody that gives the impression of wandering in a lonely land. Includes some amazing vocal work, too.

  • Sea Theme

    Size: 2.10 MB
    Automatic ending
    Comment:
Had this one for years and didn't know what it was. A beautifully astounding celtic piece that made me track down more of this game's soundtrack.

  • Snow Lands Theme
    Time: 2:19
    Size: 2.13 MB
    Automatic ending
    Comment:
A little more lighthearted than the others, but still feels quite portentous. More vocals in this one, too.

  • Swamp Lands Theme
    Time: 2:17
    Size: 2.10 MB
    Automatic ending
    Comment:
This one reminds me a LOT of the musical score for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies. Vocals again.

    (Windows PC - 2013)

Composers: Daniel Sadowski & The Hollywood Edge
If you got this game from Steam, you can actually go into the folder and find the music amongst the files in wav format. My mp3s are superior for listening, though, because the wav files only loop once and have no fadeout. My versions give you two loops and a fadeout for each song. NOTE: This game was also made for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, but this music was ripped from the PC/Steam version. I'm guessing the music is the same on all versions.

  • Action 1
    Mood/Style: Industrial, Ominous, Orchestral, Suspenseful
    Comment:
Don't expect elaborate song titles, I just named them the same as the wav files. All of these songs are for zombie attacks, so there isn't much to distinguish them anyway.

  • Action 2
    Mood/Style: Industrial, Ominous, Orchestral, Suspenseful
    Comment:
You'll hear this one a lot when clearing out shelters from zombie hordes. That alarm-like sound in the middle is when the action really picks up.

  • Action 3
    Mood/Style: Industrial, Ominous, Orchestral, Suspenseful
    Comment:
A lot of tension build-up for this one. I seem to recall hearing this in the swamp a lot.

  • Action 4
    Mood/Style: Industrial, Ominous, Orchestral, Suspenseful
    Comment:
Like the previous song, this one builds a lot of tension, but then actually goes to a crescendo. I've had many a Game Over when this song was playing.

  • Action 5

    Comment:
Weird and nightmarish. Reminds me of the intro/outro on Lost.

  • Giant

    Comment:
The boss music is the longest and most complex. It is also my favorite of these songs.

    HYPERZONE
    (Super NES)

    Composer: Jun Ishikawa

Here's a game that exists as little more than a Super NES graphics and sound demo, but it has some pretty decent sound to demo.

  • Blast Furnace
    Time: 1:58
    Size: 1.81 MB
    2 loops with fadeout
    Comment:
My favorite of the level themes from HyperZone, Blast Furnace is fast, frantic, and has excellent percussion. Has a crazy jazz-like feel and even some strange fluttering trumpet notes.

  • Credits
    Time: 3:44
    Size: 3.42 MB
    2 loops with fadeout
    Comment:
The ending theme that made my original Top 50. I used to love listening to this in the sound test long before I beat the game. It's one of the most happy and uplifting ending songs I've ever heard.
