Oddities 28: Switched at Birth? Part 8

Because you silly folks out there just can't seem to get enough of this feature, here's another edition of S.A.B. Thanks again to all those who submitted entries for this round.

Rachessa from Albert Odyssey

Kiyone from Tenchi Muyo!

FO's Comment: This is it! This is the SAB that started it all! My idea for SAB started a long time ago, before my site even existed, when I noticed that Rachessa looks a lot like Kiyone while I was playing Albert Odyssey one night. The reason it was never featured until now is because my original scan of Rachessa was lost when I had some problems with my old PC. I finally got the PC working again, and I re-scanned the pic. One problem with this one is that the drawing of Rachessa that I have here doesn't look quite as much as Kiyone as the sprite in the game does (particularly when she's riding on the dragon), so I probably should get a screen capture of that eventually.

Howard Phillips

Conan O'Brien

FO's Comment: Here's something else I found on my old PC! This was posted on a message board by Crawl and 1000 years ago, and I had it all prepared as an entry in the first SAB article that never was made because I lost that Rachessa pic. You may remember "Nintendo Fun Club President" Howard Phillips from the "Howard & Nester" NP comics, and Conan O'Brien from his late night talk show.

Captain Falcon

Judge Dredd

Submitted by Codie Martin, "I remember the first time I saw Judge Dredd, I said "Hey! It's Captain Falcon!""

FO's Comment: The similarity of the helmets is striking.

Kevin Keene from Captain N

Chris Thorndyke from Sonic X

Submitted by Deven711, "It may seem confusing at first. Until you recognize their clothes. Compare their clothes and their skin color and you might make the connection."

FO's Comment: It's as though Chris is what Kevin may have looked like when he was a little bit younger.

Chicken Stinger from Altered Beast

Bullsquid from Half-Life

This is a rather unusual entry from Tyson Evans. He says, "Piggybacking upon what Dire 51 had submitted about the "Chicken Stinger/Chicken Leg" character from the Altered Beast and Golden Axe games. I have found something quite similar to that same character in the PC game "Half-Life". It is an enemy called the "Bullsquid" and is also known as the "Bullchicken"."

FO's Comment: He sent this in as a "cameo", but I thought it was more appropriate for SAB.

Ganondorf from Zelda

Rothbart from the Swan Princess

Submitted by Deven711, "Doesn't Ganondorf look like that villian from the movie "The Swan Princess"? He has orange hair and a beard just like him. He has almost the exact same voice as him and he turns into a monster too. And one of the steps to defeat him is to fire an arrow at him which is what the prince did to the other monster in the movie."

Sektor and Cyrax from Mortal Kombat 3

The Predator

This one submitted by Nixxy Blayde, "I think that Ed Boon and John Tobias actually ripped off the Predator design for those robots. They both have the thick braided hair and the masks look similar."

FO's Comment: Yeah, that's what I think, too.

Cyborg 007 & 006 from Cyborg 009

Luigi and Mario

Submitted by Lord Draco3, "Somebody said that 006 (the fat fire breathing guy) and 007 (the transforming guy), both from Cyborg 009, look like Mario and Luigi. 007 even wore green at one point (not all that big though), and then in one episode it looks like 006 is going down a pipe when he falls through the ground."

FO's Comment: I think this might be an actual reference. Cyborg 009 was created by Shotaro Ishinomori, who was the same person who wrote and illustrated the The Legend of Zelda comics that appeared in Nintendo Power magazine a long time ago.

Cyborg 002 from Cyborg 009

Roam from The Legend of Zelda comics

Submitted by Magical Yard Gnome.

FO's Comment: This is definitely not a coincidence, both characters were designed by Shotaro Ishinomori. Cyborg 002's real name is Jet Link!

Cyborg 009

Shin Kazama
from UN Squadron/Area 88

FO's Comment: And for that matter, I think Cyborg 009 himself looks like Shin Kazama from UN Squadron. This show is just full of look-a-likes!

Dr. Wright from SimCity

Groucho Marx

Submitted by James FP, "I think Dr. Wright from SimCity was based on Groucho Marx, don't you?"

FO's Comment: He's actually based on SimCity game creator Will Wright, but the resemblance is uncanny.

Maxim from Lufia 2

Adol Christen from Ys

Another one by James FP, "That sprite of Maxim that you used for your Lufia 2 review looks almost exactly like that big sprite of Adol on your main page."

FO's Comment: All RPG characters with spiky red hair look like Adol to me, but that one's particularly uncanny.

Tin Star

Simon Belmont from Captain N

Also submitted by James FP, "Take a look at the picture of Tin Star's head on the title screen of the Tin Star game and compare that to the picture of Simon Belmont from Captain N on the very first Switched at Birth page you did."

FO's Comment: Shocking...

Dark Queen from Battletoads

Elvira

Also submitted by James FP, "I'm surprised this wasn't submitted sooner, as it's kind of an obvious one, but the Dark Queen from Battletoads looks like the Mistress of the Dark herself, Elvira."

FO's Comment: Elvira might be what inspired Queenie.

Super Macho Man from Punch-Out!!

Andy Kaufman

FO's Comment: Maybe it's just me, but I think that Super Macho Man looks a bit like Andy Kaufman. They at least have the same hairdo. (Picture of Super Macho Man came from Phred's Cool Punch-Out!! site)

The Koopa Bros. from Paper Mario

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

This one was submitted by Deven711.

FO's Comment: I've noticed that it seems to be a tradition of the "Mario RPG" games to have a set of enemies based on a kids action/cartoon show. Paper Mario has these. Super Mario RPG had the Axem Rangers, which were based on the Power Rangers. Another thought this entry brings to mind is that I actually saw someone using the Koopa Bros. for an avatar on a message board a long time ago. It was the first time I had seen them and I pointed out that they looked like a TMNT spoof. They didn't believe it was intentional.
